Mountainous area with colourful ethnic minorities and stunning views of magnificent rice terraces that cling to mountains slopes and drops into narrow gorges

The former French hill station of Sapa sits high in the mountainous north west on the edge of the majestic Hoang Lien National Park. This is the territory of hill peoples, with ethnic minority groups creating a rich and colourful tapestry of cultures and traditions.

Minorities of Sapa

Vietnam is home to 54 different ethnic minorities. Sapa is home to several of these, and when you visit Sapa, you will meet them in their home area.

Each minority has it own language, traditional clothing and traditions. They also live in different areas of the mountains.

Hiking or biking in Sapa

Sapa hiking tours and mountain bike rides starting from Topas Ecolodge or Topas Riverside Lodge take visitors deep into this remote region away from the tourist groups venturing out from Sapa itself. Discover trekking in Sapa and explore routes on buffalo trails amongst picturesque rice terraces. Sapa tours bring visitors closer to the people of the region, visiting local homes for an insight into the daily life and work of the minorities that have tended the land here for generations.
